Palm Springs (film review)

I have given myself the low key challenge of watching new-to-me romantic comedies I come across and in a perfect world, type up my thoughts on them. My most recent watch is Palm Springs which I was recommended on Hulu right as I was about to click resume and spend another Saturday night binging Sex and the City.

The long story short summary of the film by IMDb:

When carefree Nyles and reluctant maid of honor Sarah have a chance encounter at a Palm Springs wedding, things get complicated as they are unable to escape the venue, themselves, or each other.

Palm Springs stars Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti and is definitely worth the watch if you’re already a fan of either one of these actors and if you’re a fan of romantic comedies. The romantic aspect to the story does take a slight backseat to the overall plot, but it is still there and it’s obvious that the two main characters reaching their happy ever after is the intended outcome of the movie.

The movie is refreshing because it isn’t something I have seen yet in the world of romantic comedies. The two main characters find themselves stuck in a time loop with one another and experiencing the same day over and over again. This gave me as the viewer a few things to ponder; I watched the movie with my husband and we got to talking about the idea of experiencing the same day over and over again. The characters stuck in this loop can experience pain but don’t die. They can travel, but they will wake up in the same place the woke up in the morning they became stuck in the time loop. So, knowing all of that, is the ‘time loop’ that bad? Or is it now on you to get creative and find ways to live this same day, differently? I mean, in the world of romantic comedies, the more outrageous the plot line, the better!

I was really nervous that the movie wouldn’t be funny; I have a really old school sense of humor but the humor in it worked. There aren’t necessarily any laugh out loud jokes or funny dialogue but it was the interactions between characters that I found comedic.

The big question is, how do the two characters find themselves out of the loop and when it’s time to finally give escaping it a try, they are on the same page that even if they aren’t successful, they’d rather be dead than living without each other. xx

I really enjoyed it and think it’s definitely worth a watch! I’d love to hear from you if you’ve watched it!
